Baki Hanma

The protagonist of the entire series, from the age of three, trained in martial arts under various masters for ten years. He then decides to take his training to the next level by teaming up with his father Yūjirō. However, he is disappointed by his extreme violence and is almost killed by him. Only the sacrifice of his mother saves his life. His death, therefore, leads him to train to become the strongest fighter in the world and defeat his father. During the Death Row Saga, he is poisoned by Yanagi but manages to heal while participating in the Raitai tournament.
Yūjirō Hanma

The father of Baki and Jack, he is also known by the name of Ogre and as “the strongest creature on earth”. He is known to master any known style of fighting and martial arts though he prefers to use brute force. Yūjirō is a tall, powerful man with long red hair and seems to age very slowly. He is extremely strong to the point of being able to block an earthquake with one punch. He fought on the battlefields unarmed at sixteen, during the Vietnam War, challenging both Americans and Viet Cong during the war he met the soldier Diane Neil with whom he had a son named Jack.
He has proven capable of defeating an army of armed men with his bare hands and withstanding bullets and heavy weapons. After the war, he was respected by the United States, so much so that they considered him a national power in his own right; if all future American presidents would take him into consideration, in return Yūjirō would work for them as a mercenary. Yūjirō claims to have, in addition to Baki and Jack, several other children scattered around the world and according to him they will look for him to challenge him.
Jack Hanma

Son of Yūjirō and soldier Diane Nail, and the older half-brother of Baki. His mother was raped by Yūjirō in revenge as she tried to lure him into a trap to have him killed by the US Army. Getting pregnant after the assault, Diane gave birth to Jack and never denied him, instead considering him as redemption for her sins. As Jack grew older he eventually learned of his father and brother’s existence and began training to rival them. The workouts he underwent were so intense as to lead him to compromise his physique.

Considering himself still too weak, Jack was found by a scientist whom he asked, after seeing his father defeat a polar bear ten times his size, to help him create a superhuman being capable of overcoming it. The scientist helped him unaware that Jack was Yūjirō’s son. His main technique is his bite: he uses it when facing very strong opponents; in other words, Jack bites his opponents in a fight causing very serious injuries to their limbs, so they are unable to continue the fight. Jack’s bite is so strong that he can bite open a coconut and chew the bones with ease. He loses part of his jaw after a brutal fight with Pickle. He engages in a series of fights with Sikorsky and also fights with Mohammed Ali Jr. winning both fights.
Doppo Orochi

A very strong elderly fighter, he is a black belt in karate and head of the Shinshinkai school. He has trained in martial arts for fifty years. In the first series, he challenges Yūjirō to stand up to him, but ends up losing an eye. In the second part, he fights in the tournament together with his son Katsumi, a young promise of the same art as his father. During the duels, in the third round, he defeated Goki Shibukawa and Amanai Yu. During the Death Row Saga Dorian manages to cut off his left hand, but Doppo manages to have it reattached defeating Dorian afterward. However Dorian manages to take his revenge by breaking into Doppo’s house and defacing him with an explosive. He is the protagonist of the spin-off manga Baki Gaiden: Kenjin.
Katsumi Orochi

Son of Orochi Doppo, he is also an expert karateka and teaches in his father’s Shinshinkai dojo. He is very interested in making the dojo evolve, interweaving it with other fighting styles, to the point of asking for the collaboration of Kosho Shirogi and Retsu Kaioh (with whom he is also a very good friend). During the saga of the condemned to death, he is wounded in the throat by Dorian, taking revenge a few days later by setting him on fire. He later manages to defeat Doyle and the two become friends.
Mitsunari Tokugawa

He’s an old man who runs the arena matches under the Tokyo Dome, where fighters from all over the world can compete without any rules. He has a great knowledge of martial arts even though he doesn’t fight often and of the fighters themselves, including birthdays and family members. He is a friend of Doppo Orochi and Antonio Igari. A close acquaintance of Yūjirō, he was one of the few who managed to knock him out. Tokugawa usually prefers to leave fights as they are, but it can happen that he can change the rules if this means amplifying the action, even threatening a doctor with a knife while he was trying to interrupt a fight.
Kaoru Hanayama

A boy who is also the strongest local Yakuza. When his father died, he was adopted by his uncle who saw his great potential. Although he is gigantic he is actually very young. He fights with brute force and his grip is so strong that he can blow off his arm and cut off blood flow. Baki considers him a friend and on the other hand, Kaoru shows him respect by often paying his respects at her mother’s grave. Defeated by Baki, he enters the tournament in the second series easily defeating Katsumi Orochi. Kaoru is the protagonist of two spin-off manga. During the saga of the condemned to death, he collides with the outlaw Spec and defeats him, but ends up with a disfigured face.
Yū Amanai

A genetically engineered soldier. He was supposed to defeat Yūjirō but becomes his student after he kidnapped the president of the United States. His technique is based on calm, as opposed to that of Yūjirō’s anger. In fact, Yu despises Yūjirō for his way of inflicting violence on the defeated, to the point of hitting him without fear, accusing him of the little respect he has for the weakest. He enters the tournament by substituting for a wrestler that Yūjirō kills before he can enter. After defeating Yamamoto Minoru, he is in turn defeated by Doppo Orochi, and, after begging Tokugawa to finish the match, is killed by Yūjirō.
Biscuit Oliva

A former Cuban assassin working for the United States. Considered the second strongest man in the world after Yūjirō, with whom he is close friends, he has a huge body and is almost invincible. Highly educated, Oliva doesn’t practice martial arts and instead prefers to use brute strength which he demonstrates when he lifts a large military helicopter without problems and when he easily destroys the steel doors of the Arizona prison where he was being held.
He also possesses a special technique whereby he rolls up in a sphere of muscles immune to any attack, then rushes at his opponent and crushes him. He participates in the tournament where he defeats Ron Shobun and Yoh Kaioh and is later defeated by Baki. Later he faces Sukune from which he is severely defeated.
Kozue Matsumoto

Baki Hanma’s classmate, the two fall in love over time until they get together. She initially doesn’t know of Baki’s real identity and the violent world of fighters where he lives; after finding out, she still chooses to stay close to Baki, as she knows her destiny is that of a fighter. Despite appearances, Kozue possesses a strong will and spirit like those of Baki and his fighting friends, not feeling fear towards them: in fact, she is not afraid to say what she thinks, even kicking Hanayama full of contempt for how he judged the women of little account, intimidating him with words. Her strength and temper in the world of fighting have led many wrestlers to respect her, impressed by her fortitude.
Yūichirō Hanma

He is the father of Yūjirō Hanma and grandfather of Baki and Jack and was before his son the strongest creature in the world. He shows himself as a very imposing and muscular man, whose physical size is even greater than that of Biscuit Oliva, with long hair tied with a string and a mild gaze. He is known to have defeated, before Yūjirō, the Americans on the small island of Okinawa during World War II, killing two thousand American soldiers and the commander using a single technique.
The entire US Navy fleet, hearing of his fame, bombarded the island with the intention of killing him but they only succeeded in reducing the island to rubble, while Yūichiro escaped unharmed. He appears during the fight between Baki and Yūjirō where he makes fun of the latter because he can’t defeat a child. He considers his son a very problematic child.
Pickle

A gigantic man who lived in the Jurassic period. He was found locked in a glacier intent on fighting a T-rex. Believing him dead, it was discovered that he was actually still alive, sleeping in a natural state of hibernation. Pickle turns out to be a missing link in the ladder of human evolution. Leader of a community of superhuman primitive men who lived in the Jurassic period, Pickle had no natural predators except himself and came to hunt and face all kinds of dinosaurs alone, including the most ferocious ones and his most recurring opponent was a big, 9-meter tall T-Rex, with which he engaged in fights to the death.

He will meet a reporter with whom he falls in love and later becomes engaged to her. Although he is unable to speak and only makes noises, a voice in his head always describes what he is doing at that moment using the first person as if it were Pickle himself describing it.
Spec

American serial killer with a wry sense of humor, he is kept locked up in an underwater prison. He easily escapes by killing all the guards, then traveling to Japan where he starts killing randomly and mockingly showing up at the police station. Although he has a very muscular body he is very old, which was discovered after his fight with Kaoru Hanayama.
He is able to swim very fast at great depths, can resist bullets, and swallow and hide objects such as guns and small bombs in his body; he is able to stay in apnea for a long time and during the apnea launch superhuman attacks. He tries to attack Baki and Kozue, but is stopped by the intervention of Kaoru Hayanama with whom he engages in a very bloody fight. He puts the yakuza in trouble by even disfiguring his face but is eventually defeated and sent into a coma.
Kaiō Dorian

A member of the 5 prisoners, he is a huge man with white hair and a beard. Black sheep of the Kaiohs who disowned him due to his killer instincts, he is extremely strong in combat. Shortly after his escape, he breaks into the Shinshinkai dojo seriously wounding Katsumi Orochi, then antagonizing the entire dojo for having massacred Kiyosumi Kato. He is defeated by Doppo Orochi after a hard fight but takes his revenge shortly thereafter by disfiguring Orochi himself with an explosive contained in his wrist. He will then be severely defeated by Retsu Kaioh and the blow suffered is so hard as to regress his mind to that of a 5-year-old. After the accident, he is entrusted to whoever manages the place where he became Kaioh for rehabilitation.
Hector Doyle

A British serial killer, he is a member of the 5 prisoners and escapes the electric chair to reach Japan. Arriving at his destination, he breaks into Baki’s school and then infiltrates the police station to clash with Biscuit Oliva. He then battles other wrestlers and is finally defeated by Katsumi Orochi. After the defeat, he changes his behavior becoming much kinder, but during a fight with the inmate Yanagi, he loses the use of his eyesight. It is later revealed that he also ruptured his eardrums to train his sense of touch. In combat, he makes heavy use of items such as razor blades, daggers, explosives, and bulletproof vests.
